Getting Started
Welcome to the foundational section of the 57 Studios™ Modding Knowledge Base. Before a person can build mods for Unturned™, that person needs a working mental model of how a personal computer organizes information and how a human operator interacts with the operating system. This section establishes that foundation from the ground up.
The articles in this section assume no prior experience with computers, file systems, or game development tooling. Each article builds directly on the one before it, so reading them in order produces the most complete understanding.
Begin with What is Unturned?, which introduces the game itself, its developer, and the engine that powers it. Continue to What is Modding? to learn how custom content fits into the broader game ecosystem. The next three articles, What is a File?, What is a Folder?, and What is a File Extension?, establish the file system concepts every mod developer relies on every day. Finish with How to Right-Click on Windows and How to Use Your Keyboard to ensure the physical input devices feel familiar before moving on to Steam setup.
After completing this section, the reader will be ready to create a Steam account, install the game, and begin downloading the official modding tools.
